Did you know that...
Port is without doubt the most renowned fortified wine. This great Portuguese wine is produced in the Douro valley in dozens of varieties of grapes, the main one being the Touriga Nacional.
It is produced by halting fermentation through adding almost pure alcohol, which increases the alcohol content while leaving a high level of residual sugar. There are four great Port families: Ruby or Vintage Character, Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), Tawny and Vintage Port.
The Ruby is for everyday consumption and is lighter.
The LBV is a more robust Vintage Port that must have spent at least 4 years in oak casks before being bottled.
The Tawny will have aged for a long time in barrels and comes from a mix of various harvest years. Finally, the Vintage comes from a single harvest year and from only the best plots. It can be aged a long time in the bottle.
